A full range of mailing services, including sorting, postage, addressing, labelling, folding and list acquisition.An experienced truck driver, Jim Dalton was fired in 1986 from Roadway Express and while searching for employment, donated spare time to his church’s community activities. A fellow church member mentioned to Jim that the church-owned mail room equipment was underutilized and could be the foundation for a small business. Unimpressed, Jim continued his fruitless search for another month before the idea of a mailroom business truly registered. After taking another look at it he thought, “Well, maybe this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” Although he knew nothing about the business, he decided to give it a try and see how things went.
Jim, his wife, Barbara, and son, Bob, called every printer in Richardson, Plano and North Dallas. They picked up some business, learning as they grew. By the end of the first year, they had moved from the church basement to their own place and bought their own equipment. A year later, the company doubled again, and got more space and equipment. By end of the third year, Dalton Mailing Service, Inc. doubled yet again, to 3,100 square feet. Now, almost 19 years later, the company fills 16,800 square feet. The company has a wide variety of customers and mail loads vary from a few hundred pieces to 250,000 or more.
Unfortunately, Jim Dalton passed away in September of 1999, but his legacy lives on. After leaving Dalton Mailing for a few years working in sales and management, Bob came back to the family business with his wife, Dyan in 1994. Since Jim’s passing, Bob has moved into the role as President and is still Production Manager. Bob’s wife Dyan is the Office Manager. Tom Daley, Technical Services Manager, has been with Dalton Mailing since 1991. Debra Renfro, Account Executive, has been with Dalton since 1999. Melissa Diaz, Administrative Assistant, has been with the company since 2002, and there are several production employees who have been with the company 5 years or more.
To quote Jim, “I firmly believe the Lord had his hand in putting us here and keeping us in business. I love the sense of accomplishment I get. I’ve put my whole life into the business and it’s an extension of me. I like helping customers and building something that my kids and grandkids can have from now on, if they want it.”
