Together, we made History and paved our path to the Stars!
Thanks to your support, the first non-government human spaceflights took place in 2004. Private astronauts flew not once but three times. Millions witnessed these events either live or through our webcasts, telecasts, news, and special programs. A wave of optimism has begun to spread about the prospects for low-cost spaceflight now that a new class of private operators is emerging.
On October 4, 2004, SpaceShipOne rocketed into history, becoming the first private manned spacecraft to exceed an altitude of 100 km twice in as many weeks, thus claiming the $10 million dollar Ansari X-Prize. This historic event has opened the doorway to the stars for all of us. Friends, we have started a private spaceflight revolution, the end of which will result in nothing less than routine human spaceflights to the cosmos. Space is no longer a restricted area. People from all over the world witnessed this historic flight and are now witnessing the beginning what has been dubbed The Private Spaceflight Revolution.
Taking a lesson from the history books, we modeled the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE after early aviation prizes. Between 1905 and 1935, hundreds of aviation prizes stimulated the creation of 100s of diverse aircraft designs, each of which explored different regions of flight and different methods for optimizing speed, safety and low-cost travel. Because of prizes like this and the subsequent aircraft development, we now have the modern aerospace industry. Twenty six teams from seven countries signed up to compete for the $10 million prize that leveraged more than $100 million in private investment.
Thank you for believing in us and thank you for your continued support!
The success of the Ansari X PRIZE was just the beginning. In the coming months and years, we are planning the announcement of a series of prizes of an equally ambitious and exciting nature as that of the Ansari X PRIZE.
