Hobart is First Food Equipment Manufacturer to Join Green Building Council
12th December, 2006

Hobart is the first full-line commercial food equipment manufacturer to become a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, the nation's foremost coalition of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

The company recently participated in the fifth Greenbuild Expo in Denver, the council's annual conference, at which Hobart demonstrated how engineering for efficiency can contribute to cost savings and environmentally sustainable foodservice operations. Architects, engineers and foodservice managers working in K-12 and higher education learned how reducing water and energy use and waste generation can support a greener kitchen while substantially reducing long-term operating and cost-of-ownership expenses.

"The U.S. Green Building Council is a unique forum for helping project managers and facilities operators achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED(R))," said Dick Hynes, director of consultant services at Hobart. "Greenbuild is a rare opportunity for Hobart to learn about the issues affecting their efforts and to share some of the latest technology that advances cost-efficiency and environmental sustainability in buildings that include foodservice."

Hobart warewashers with the exclusive Opti-Rinse(TM) technology have been shown to reduce water and energy use up to 57 percent, while the Hobart WastePro(TM) system can reduce foodservice waste volume up to 88 percent, representing a potential annual savings of $22,000 including waste removal services. In addition, most of the company's Traulsen refrigerators, freezers and heated cabinets are Energy Star-rated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy, saving energy costs while protecting the environment.

Hobart Corporation is the world's leader in commercial food equipment and service for the foodservice and food retail industries. Hobart and Traulsen manufacture products for refrigeration; warewashing and waste handling; food preparation; baking; cooking; and weighing, wrapping and labeling systems. Hobart and Traulsen equipment is supported by a national network of 1,700 factory-trained service technicians at almost 200 locations across the United States.
