Plane from FLL diverted to Palm Beach due to mechanical problem
4th March, 2006

American Airlines Flight 889 from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was diverted to Palm Beach International Airport this morning after the crew reported a heated tail section in the aircraft, officials said.

Onboard were 137 passengers and crew.
The flight to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago left Fort Lauderdale about 10:50 a.m. and landed safely at PBIA, west of West Palm Beach, around 11:30 a.m., PBIA spokeswoman Lisa De La Rionda said.

The flight originally was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 1:15 p.m. Central Time.

The crew reported the potential problem to air traffic control, and the decision was made to land at PBIA.

Officials were expected to inspect the airplane after passengers were taken off, De La Rionda said. It was not immediately known when the passengers would board an alternative flight.
