A Hamtramck fire official said the explosion took place Monday morning at a hydraulic pump station. The injured were taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The plant said there was a mechanical malfunction in an oil fill area of one assembly line. That area of the plant has been shut down. It was expected to be up and running again for Monday's second shift.

American Axle makes chassis components and metal-formed products for light trucks, SUVs and passenger cars. General Motors is its largest customer.
