A silent night for jolly singing Santas
30th December, 2005
The season to be jolly turned sour for pensioner Ken Cook when he was ordered to shut up his mechanical singing Santas... or risk a £5,000 fine.
The grandfather-of-six was told by environmental health officers that the row of Santas and snowmen in his front garden was singing too loud and was told to switch them off.
The 6in tall festive figures burst into the Christmas favourite Santa Claus is Coming to Town each time somebody walks past.
And while most of the neighbourhood enjoyed the festive addition to their cul-de-sac in Rumney, Cardiff, a complaint was made to the council who wrote to Ken to tell him he had to shut Santa's singing off by 9pm. It is unclear exactly who made the complaint.
Things got even worse when he received another letter on Christmas Eve threatening him with a £5,000 fine if he didn't switch Santa off for good.
