New treatment targets cellulite, without surgery
30th July, 2005
It affects close to 90 percent of women -- and a few men.
But now there's a new weapon in the war against unsightly cellulite, just in time for summer. It's called VelaSmooth -- a non-surgical alternative, without the down time.
Michelle Nugent says, "I've tried the creams, I've tried detoxing, I've tried numerous other options."
Like millions of consumers, 35-year-old Nugent has spent years searching for a solution to cellulite.
It wasn't until recently that she found one that worked. It's called VelaSmooth.
The treatment uses radio frequency waves, a laser, and a mechanical massage to break up the fat.
Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis of Westlake Dermatology says, "If you look closely at patients with cellulite, the skin sort of has a waffle-like texture and the heat kind of smoothes that out by creating new collagen in those areas...the mechanical manipulation breaks up the bands and the heat helps smooth out the skin."
Nikolaidis says that can have an added bonus.
"A lot of these patients - when you measure their thighs after ten treatments, they have a decrease of about a half an inch to an inch - so in effect it looks like the patient has lost weight."
Each treatment takes less than half an hour.
Doctors recommend ten treatments to see the full results, although some patients notice a difference immediately.
Nugent says, "I've already seen some improvements. The dimpling has definitely smoothed out since the last three treatments."
The Food and Drug Administration approved VelaSmooth earlier this month.
Ten treatments will cost you about $1,500.
Doctors are still studying VelaSmooth to determine just how long the results last, but it's likely you will need a touch-up a few years down the road.
