Cooper-Standard Automotive Presented Obstacle Detection Sensors at MEMA Legislative Summit
21st June, 2008
Cooper-Standard Automotive -- a global automotive component and systems supplier -- presented its Obstacle Detection Sensors (ODS) at the 2008 MEMA Legislative Summit recently held in Washington, D.C. Cooper-Standard's ODS system utilizes an extruded sensor that reverses power window and door closures if objects pass through its sensing field to help reduce non-crash related occupant injuries.
"Our unique Obstacle Detection Sensors, which are integrated into our vehicle sealing systems, address the updated government regulations for power window and door safety systems. The Cooper-Standard system strives to lower the instances of non-crash related occupant injuries," said Lyle Otremba, vice president of sales and engineering, Body and Chassis Systems, Cooper-Standard Automotive. "Additionally, given our automotive sealing expertise, Cooper-Standard can design and manufacture tailored sensing systems to meet the unique requirements of our diverse global customers."
The system's Proximity Obstacle Detection Sensor (P-ODS) provides the power window/door reversal signals in the event that an animate object comes within three millimeters of the extruded sensor during closure. Additionally, a Tactile Obstacle Detection Sensor (T-ODS) provides a reversal signal if an inanimate object obstructs the window/door during closure. The P-ODS and T-ODS are built into a single sensor that can be strategically positioned at potential pinch regions of the window/door for optimal vehicle occupant safety. The sensors work in all environmental conditions and can sense through clothing, including gloves. The T-ODS force curve is well below competitors, requiring less mass to signal the reverse sensor.
ODS is a natural complement to Cooper-Standard's current sealing technologies as it integrates directly into the sealing components of power-operated windows, sunroofs, liftgates, deck lids and sliding doors, as the sensors can be coextruded into the sealing components or can be attached to molded or stamped retainers and interior trim to secure on vehicle surfaces.
The MEMA Legislative Summit strives to further relationships with members of congress and congressional staff in order to shape upcoming legislative priorities and encourage legislators to adopt a pro-manufacturing agenda that enables MEMA members to compete globally. In its fifth year, the 2008 event will work to highlight economic contributions of the supplier industry, establish relationships with key elected officials and legislative staff and address important industry issues.
